Tuna auctioned off at record price in Tokyo

01-05-2012 14:16 BJT

TOKYO, Jan. 5(Xinhua)-- A bluefin tuna was auctioned off at a record price of 56.49 million yen(about 740,000 U.S. dollars) at the Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market in Tokyo on Thursday.

The 269-kilogram sea fish set the record at the first auction of the year in Tokyo's Tsukiji market. The previous record of 32. 49 million yen was held by a tuna from Hokkaido last year.

A Tokyo-based sushi restaurant-chain operator was the successful bidder of the fish which came from Aomori Prefecture.

Kiyoshi Kimura, chief of the operator, was quoted by local media as saying that he meant the bid to enliven the country which was stuck in economic stagnation and hit by the twin disasters in March last year.
