At least 10 killed, 43 wounded in Baghdad bomb attacks

BAGHDAD, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- At least ten people were killed and some 43 others were wounded in a series of bomb attacks in eastern and northern Baghdad on Thursday morning, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua.

One attack occurred when a booby-trapped motorcycle went off among a crowd of construction workers near an intersection in the Shiite district of Sadr City in eastern Baghdad, the source said on condition of anonymity.

A second attack took place at a busy intersection near the al-Sadr hospital in the same neighborhood of Sadr City when two roadside bombs detonated in a quick succession, the source said.

"The latest police reports said that a total of nine people were killed and 35 were wounded in the two attacks," the source added.

In a separate incident, two roadside bomb explosions ripped through two crowded intersections in the Shiite neighborhood of Kadhmiyah in northern Baghdad, killing a civilian and wounding eight others, the source said.

The toll could rise as ambulances and civilian cars were evacuating the victims to different hospitals and medical centers, he said.

Many Iraqis are worried about a resurgence of ethnic and sectarian violence that once nearly torn the country apart few years ago.
