People flee coastal areas in Aceh, Indonesia as tsunami warning in place

01-11-2012 09:22 BJT

JAKARTA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- People living in coastal areas in Aceh province are fleeing the areas to over one kilometer from the coast for fear of tsunami, as a tsunami warning remains in place, official said on Wednesday.

Ibnu Sa'ad, head of emergency unit of provincial disaster management and mitigation agency said that the local authorities had ordered the people to leave the areas after 7.6 magnitude quake rocked the province at 01:36 a.m. Jakarta time Wednesday (18: 36 GMT Tuesday).

The epicenter of the quake was at 350 km southwest Meulaboh town of Aceh province and with the depth at 10 km under sea bed, an official of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency told Xinhua by phone.

"We have asked people in coastal areas at Meulaboh town and Ulele in Banda Aceh to leave the coastal areas by up to one kilometer from it for their safety if tsunami occurs," he told Xinhua over phone from Aceh province. "The people have rushed out their homes since the quake hit, but they did not panic," said Ibnu.

However, local Metro TV reported the quake triggered panic in Meulaboh town. The meteorology and geophysics agency has issued a tsunami warning and has not lifted it so far, the official of the agency said.

Over 170,000 people were killed in Aceh when a tsunami hit Indian Ocean in Dec. 2004. The total fatality at the countries along the ocean was at about 230,000 people.
