01-11-2012 11:57 BJT

SYDNEY, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- A bushfire in Western Australia's northwest is still burning and the fire intensity has increased, authorities said on Wednesday.

A bushfire watch and act alert remains in place for people near the North West Coastal Highway and west of Kennedy Range National Park in the Shire of Carnarvon.

The bushfire remains a threat to lives and homes in the area, the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) said in a warning issued on Wednesday.

The intensity of the fire increased on Tuesday night, pushed towards the Gascoyne River by north-east winds, the department said.

The fire has burnt through more than 286,000 hectares so far.

Fire crews are continuing to construct containment lines next to the North West Coastal Highway and are strengthening containment lines north of the Gascoyne River out to the North West Coastal Highway.

More than 100 personnel from various agencies are working on the incident.
