5 killed in rail collision in eastern India

01-11-2012 14:30 BJT

NEW DELHI, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed and 14 others injured in a rail mishap in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand Wednesday morning, said police.

The mishap happened at 06:00 a.m. when a Delhi-bound passenger train, Brahmaputra Mail, coming from northeastern state of Assam, collided with a goods train at Karonpuroto near Sahibganj district in the state.

While five people died on the spot, the injured, two of them in critical condition, have been rushed to a hospital.

Local TV channels claimed that a coach of the Brahmaputra Mail overturned in the collision and showed footage of several people being trapped in the wreckage as local people were trying to rescue the passengers from the compartment.

Meanwhile, rail traffic has come to a standstill in the area and several trains have been delayed.

Senior railway officials have rushed to the spot and a relief train has also reached the spot," a senior railway official said.

Mishaps are common on the state-owned Indian railways, an immense network connecting every corner of the vast country. Some 1,220 people were killed in train accidents over the last five years, railway officials revealed last month.

The railway network operates 9,000 passenger trains, carrying some 18 million passengers every day.
