Abducted Australian national transferred to Sulu, Philippines -- police

ZAMBOANGA CITY, the Philippines, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Philippine security forces are verifying the presence of kidnapped Australian national in the province of Sulu following intelligence reports the Abu Sayyaf militants have brought their victim to the province.

Chief Supt. Bienvenido Latag, police director for Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), said Wednesday Warren Richard Rodwell, 56, was reportedly transferred by his captors from Basilan to the bigger Abu Sayyaf group based in Sulu last Saturday.

"We are verifying this reports and at the same time the possible whereabouts of the victim in the area," Latag said in a briefing.

Rodwell was abducted from his home in Ipil town, Zamboanga Sibugay province last Dec. 5. In a videotape sent to his Filipino wife Miraflor Gutang, Rodwell appealed to his family and to the Philippine government to raise the 2 million U.S. dollars ransom in exchange for his release.
