Survey: Chinese’s ability to use mother tongue declining

An online survey conducted by the China Youth Daily’s social investigation center shows that 58.2 percent of the 1,770 respondents are concerned with the new HNC test, which is designed to test one's Chinese skills. Only 26.2 percent think that the status quo of Chinese language application can be improved through the HNC test, 42.1 percent oppose this opinion and 31.7 percent say “It is hard to say.” Among the respondents, 29.4 percent were born in the 1970s, 42.6 percent in the 1980s and 10.9 percent in the 1990s.

“Chinese language crisis” appears in China now?

More than 83 percent believe Chinese people’s native language application level has declined, 45 percent of which said it “has dropped a lot.”

Nearly 73 percent of the respondents say computer helps people to express themselves instead of writing; 67 percent say dynamic online language makes Chinese language fragmented; 67.7 percent think that people do not attach importance to Chinese language and there has been “foreign language fever but ignoring native language” in China; and 57.1 percent think there is a fracture of traditional cultural heritage and Chinese expression becomes increasingly vulgar.

According to the survey, 57.7 percent people say Chinese language education is obviously exam-oriented and cannot demonstrate the aesthetics of Chinese. About 60.9 percent believe that “Chinese language crisis” exists in China contemporarily.
