Coordinated action by G-77 essential for Rio+20: UNGA president

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- "Coordinated action by the Group of 77 (G-77 and China) is essential for a successful UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20)," Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, president of the UN General Assembly, said here Wednesday.

The remarks were delivered by Dr Mutlaq al Qahtani, chef de cabinet at a meeting of the G-77, as Algeria officially took over the chairmanship of the diplomatic group that is comprised of countries of the global South.

"I am convinced that under the strong leadership of Algeria the Rio+20 negotiations will lead to a successful outcome and will be an opportunity to give effect to a new vision," Al-Nasser said.

With Rio+20 scheduled for June 20-22 in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, the international community will be brought together to discuss progress made on sustainable development thus far and renew political commitments to this goal for the future.

Al-Nasser said the "new vision" achieved at Rio+20 will be based on a concrete program of action for addressing gaps in means of implementation in the sustainable development agenda, as well as on efforts to address new and emerging challenges.

He also noted the need "to redouble our joint efforts to surmount the challenges and obstacles we face in the advancement of the UN's development agenda."

"Together, we must ensure that programs and activities established to address the needs of the developing countries are accorded the appropriate resources," Al-Nasser said. "As the date set for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) rapidly approaches, we must work together to secure the progress achieved so far and build upon hard-won economic and development gains achieved so far."

For the upcoming year, Al-Nasser also voiced confidence in the G-77 to continue to effectively promote the UN's development agenda and the views of the developing countries in addition to furthering South-South ties of cooperation.
