France strongly condemns killing of TV journalist in Syria

PARIS, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- French Foreign Minster Alain Juppe on Wednesday strongly condemned the killing of a French TV journalist in the Syrian city of Homas.

French 2 journalist Gilles Jacquier was killed Wednesday while covering demonstrations in Homas with a group of foreign journalists. Several others were wounded with a Belgian reporter sustaining an eye injury in the shell explosion.

"We vigorously condemned this odious act," the foreign minister said in a statement, "We demand an investigation so that the circumstances of this tragedy be clarified."

He also urged the Syrian authorities to conduct its duty to protect foreign journalists in the country.

The minister extend his condolences to the family and friends of Jacquier, noting that the French ambassador in Damascus will immediately go to the scene.

According to local media, Jacquier is the first Western journalist to be killed in Syria since the start of the demonstrations against the Syian authorises in March.

Local daily Le Figaro said on its website that Jacquier had arrived in Damascus on Saturday at the invitation of a nun named Mary Agnes.

As a special correspondent for France 2 since 1999, Jacquier covered conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Israel. He was awarded with Albert Londres Prize in 2003.
