LOS ANGELES, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Douglas Trumbull will receive the Gordon E. Sawyer Award, the second Academy Award he has ever won, for his body of work and technical innovation in cinematic visual effects, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Wednesday.

The Academy's Board of Governors voted to give the prize, an Oscar statuette, to the visual effects pioneer at its Scientific and Technical Awards presentation held on Feb. 11 at the Beverly Wilshire in Los Angeles.

Trumbull is credited for having "created, developed or improved numerous filmmaking techniques and tools" during his career, the Academy said in a press release.

This is the second Oscar for Trumbull, a developer of the industry's first modern 65 mm camera who shared a Scientific and Engineering Award in 1993.

A pioneer who has secured more than a dozen patents in film technology, Trumbull is best known for creating the outer-space effects in Stanley Kubrick's landmark film "2001: A Space Odyssey".

He also worked on films that include "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Star Trek - The Motion Picture" and "Blade Runner."

His most recent work was featured in a 20-minute opening act to Terrence Malick's Oscar contender "Tree of Life".
