Senior United Russia party official pledges support for Putin

01-12-2012 16:22 BJT Special Report:Russia Presidential Election 2012 |

MOSCOW, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- The United Russia party will as always follow Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, a senior party official said Wednesday, dismissing reports that Putin intends to alienate himself from the ruling party.

Putin earlier announced that he would pick members of his presidential campaign team from All-Russian People's Front rather than United Russia, sparking wide speculation that he would keep a distance from the ruling party.

In response, Andrei Vorobiev, chief of the Central Executive Committee of United Russia, denounced the claim as pure rumor, saying Putin is the presidential candidate put forward by United Russia and his party will remain committed to Putin's presidential campaign.

Vorobiev also categorically denied the speculation that United Russia would dissolve after the presidential election, saying the party has full confidence in itself.

"United Russia has won a majority in the Duma election last November, which testified to voters' trust to the party," he said.

Russia is set to hold the presidential election in March. Last November, the ruling United Russia party nominated Putin as the party's presidential candidate.

When choosing All-Russian People's Front as the basis of his re-election campaign, Putin explained that the umbrella group "is above parties and unites most different people from all walks of life with different political views but sharing common basic values of Russia's development."
