JAKARTA, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- The ASEAN Cultural Show & Exhibition 2012 opened on Friday evening in which various unique performances and exhibitors are taking part, attracting spectators to give applause and appreciation.

The event itself was uniquely opened by ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan, government officials, ambassadors, executive and artists with their joint guitar play.

According to Pitsuwan, through art, culture and performance, people will get to know each other better.

"Sectors of tourism, trade and economy are important for the ASEAN but unless our people feel the value of artistic expression in performance and culture, it would be very difficult to see the ASEAN as a solid community," said Pitsuwan.

The first performance was Saman Dance from Indonesia's Aceh province that was added to the UNESCO intangible heritage list in November 2011. Fifteen dancers and two musicians performed an energetic dance with vibrant music.

The second performance was Thai kick boxing or Muay Thai by an eight year-old boy.Pitsuwan, while introducing the boy, named Porn Natcha, said that Muay Thai is not only about kicking and elbowing.

"What we will watch here is Muay Thai dedicated to pay respect to teachers, that is passing on down to generations," he said.

Porn Natcha made moves well, and for a kid who had been trained only for a month to perform Muay Thai, he was amazing.

According to Pornpimol Chalermpalanupap, president of the Thai Women's Association in Jakarta, Porn Natcha also performed on Dec. 4 before the Thai Community with several Thai children to celebrate the King's Birthday.

Pornpimol Taveessok, Porn Natcha's mother, said that her kid was trained by her brother.

"But he performs for culture only, not for any fighting championship," she told Xinhua.

The third performance was the KSP Band from Indonesia, playing Indonesian traditional songs with modern arrangement

One exhibitor displaying his product was Haryo Sasongko, founder of the Guitar & Batik (G & B) Company that produces guitars with batik ornament.

"We produce a product with differentiation but nice to play and qualified," Sasongko told Xinhua.

He said that his product has become a pioneer and now several companies imitate his products.

"That's fine. We're OK with that. That's a competition even though we have registered our product for intellectual property right, starting from traditional batik on guitar, gluing batik on guitar and painting batik on guitar," said Sasongko.

He said that even though his products were released years ago, he is often invited to join cultural exhibitions to promote his traditional thing mixed with modern one.

"I was invited to join Jakarta Pro Audio, trade events, ASEAN events and Java Jazz Festival. In March, I will fly to Melbourne in Australia to join a cultural promotion and to Germany's Frankfurt for the Musik Messe festival. In the next three months, I will fly to Hungary's Budapest for a similar event," he said.

The ASEAN Cultural Show & Exhibition 2012 scheduled on Jan. 20- 22 is part of continuing efforts of ASEAN member states and the ASEAN Secretariat to reach out to the public and continue to engage them in the bloc's events and activities.
