BERLIN, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- At the opener of the second half of the season, fourth positioned team Monchengladbach inflicted the German record champion and division leader Bayern Munich a sensational 3-1 loss at out sold Borussia Park at the 18th match day on Friday.

Host Borussia Monchengladbach started with an early goal at the 11th minute to shock the guest from Munich, at the first match of 2012, as midfielder Marco Reus capitalized on a misplaced pass by Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to slot home the opener.

Bayern remained shocked and unable to overcome "Gladbachs" well positioned defence.

Five minutes before interval Monchengladbach doubled the lead when midfielder Patrick Herrmann finished a fast break into left side to flabbergast the German record champion.

Monchengladbach kept it bowling and lurked for counter attacks with the beginning of the second half as Bayern seemed absolutely unimaginative. Thus Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Herrmann sealed his brace when he again finished a fast break, after he overcame Bayern goalie Manuel Neuer, at the 71st minute to wrap a sensational and unexpected 3-1 win against division leader Bayern.

Bayern was only able to score the consolation goal at the 76th minute when midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger hammered home from goal area after a corner from the left wing to mark the final 3-1 score.

"We played very well. We were compact, which has made it difficult for Bayern" , Monchengladbach coach Lucien Favre said after the match.

"The first goal was unnecessary. The crucial point was the 2-0 before interval" , Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said.

Bayern stays on top of the standings with 37 points while Monchengladbach jumps from 4th to 2nd position with 36 points after the sensational win over lethargic Bavarians.

The following fixtures are set for tomorrows 18th match day : Schalke vs. Stuttgart, Wolfsburg vs. Cologne, Hoffenheim vs. Hannover, Nuremberg vs. Berlin, Freiburg vs. Augsburg and Kaiserslautern.
