Danish Prime Minister visits troops in Afghanistan

01-21-2012 10:11 BJT

COPENHAGEN, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt made her first visit to Afghanistan since took office last year, her office said Friday.

Thorning-Schmidt was flown to Afghanistan Friday under secrecy and heavy security, where she met with Danish troops stationed in Helmand province.

Denmark currently has some 750 troops stationed in the province as part of a NATO-led stabilization mission in the country.

Thorning-Schmidt also met Helmand province governor Golab Mangal, to discuss plans for Afghans to take over military and police responsibilities following the withdrawal of NATO troops in 2014.

She visited a police training school in Lashkar Gah, and met with the British commander of Task Force Helmand.

Thorning-Schmidt admitted there are still "many challenges in Afghanistan" but that the efforts of the Danish soldiers were praiseworthy.

Thorning-Schmidt's visit comes on the same day that four French troops serving in the NATO mission were shot and killed by an Afghan solider in the eastern part of the country, underlining the security challenges that still remain

Denmark will continue to provide financial support to Afghan military and police after the 2014 pullout, the country's Foreign Minister Villy Soevndal said in December.
