Communist to remain only party in Cuba: Castro

01-30-2012 09:47 BJT

HAVANA, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Cuban leader Raul Castro on Sunday said the Cuban Communist Party (CCP) will continue as the only recognized political party in the country.

At the closing of the first CCP National Conference, Castro said: "Cuba will never renounce to have a single political party, as imperialism pretends, because that decision would lead to the defeat of the Revolution and would sacrifice people's unity."

Castro rejected the possibility of a multi-party model in Cuba and criticized "those who thought that the conference would mark the beginning of the political and social dismounting of the revolution, and were claiming for the restoration of the multi- party model."

Castro said that the principle of a single political party is based on the fifth article of the Cuban Constitution, which "was approved by 99.7 percent of electors by their free and secret vote. "

He, however, called for efforts to promote "the biggest democracy in our society and inside the CCP."

"It is necessary to disagree and say the truth," the Cuban leader said. In many of his speeches, Castro has urged Cubans to " speak the truth without fear."

A total of 806 delegates attended the two-day national conference, during which they debated on issues including economic reform, social vandalism and corruption.
