S. Korea's ruling party softens stance on DPRK in new platform

01-30-2012 14:42 BJT

South Korea's conservative ruling Grand National Party presented a new platform that moderated its hard-line stance against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), local media reported Monday.

The party plans to discard a clause pledging its efforts to promote human rights in the DPRK and help the communist country's transition to a democracy, according to Yonhap News Agency.

The new platform reportedly vows the party will "actively support" the DPRK in its attempt to join the international community "as a responsible member", reflecting concerns the previous clause might be provocative.

The shift comes as opposition lawmakers and liberals blame President Lee Myung-bak and his ruling party's confrontational policies toward Pyongyang for lingering cross-border tension on the divided peninsula.

Inter-Korean relations, which have been on a downward spiral since Lee, a hawk, took office in 2008, reached their lowest ebb in 2010 following two deadly border incidents.

The reported revision is also the latest in a series of desperate attempts by the ruling party to revamp itself ahead of the key parliamentary and presidential elections this year.

The conservative party, proved widely unpopular among young voters in recent elections and further hit by scandals, struggles to boost its appeal to younger generations by changing the party's name and embracing more liberal values.
