Dubai becomes sports mecca in February

DUBAI, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- After finishing its month-long shopping festival, the Gulf Arab sheikhdom prepares itself to host hundreds of professional sportsmen and women, along with thousands of fans and aficionados during February.

The Golf tournament Omega Dubai Desert Classics 2012 kicked off Monday and will last until Sunday, hosting top players like the world No. 3 Lee Westwood or Nicholas Thompson.

The tournament, which will take place at Dubai's Emirates Golf Club, is regarded as one of the most important annual golf events in the Middle East.

Later on February 20, the five-day Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships will kick off. In its 20th edition, the tennis race will host stars like Switzerland's Roger Federer and the men's No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

In the women's tournament, Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and Victoria Azarenka, the current leader of the WTA ranking, will compete among others.
