EU-Azerbaijan visa facilitation talks to begin in March

02-10-2012 08:01 BJT

BAKU, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Azerbaijan and the European Union (EU) will hold talks on visa facilitation on March 1-2, Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmud Mammadguliyev said here on Thursday.

Mammadguliyev earlier said that the talks might start early February, however the talks were postponed due to the storm in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan.

The EU Ministerial Council issued a mandate for holding negotiations on visa facilitation with Azerbaijan in December last year.

The signing of a visa facilitation deal between the EU and Azerbaijan will open the way for easier travel and people-to- people contact across Europe. The measures could include decreasing visa fees and reducing the number of documents required.

Such an agreement is expected to promote interaction between EU and Azerbaijan citizens and strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fight against irregular immigration.
