RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- On the same day that Flamengo paid in full Ronaldinho Gaucho' s unpaid salary, the team beat Madureira 1-0 in the Rio de Janeiro state championship on Thursday.

After threatening to leave the club due to an estimated 2.5 million US dollars of unpaid salary, Ronaldinho was relieved with the news that the club was able to muster up enough money to pay him.

On the field, Ronaldinho had a golden opportunity to score when his teammate Leonardo Moura was tackled from behind inside the goalie box, resulting in a penalty kick in the 88th minute.

Team captain and veteran midfielder Ronaldinho stepped in to take the penalty shot, but drove the ball well above the bar.

The game's only goal came in the 52nd minute when Madureira's Thiago Medeiros attempted to clear a crossed ball from Renato, but mistakenly drove the ball into his own goal.

With the three points collected on Thursday, Flamengo are standing in third place in Group A, gaining 9 points after five rounds. The team need to reach second place in order to qualify for the playoffs.

Flamengo will travel to take on Resende on February 12, which will mark

the debut of striker Vagner Love with Flamengo.
