Chinese boxing victories in Hungary tournament

BUDAPEST, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- A strong Chinese boxing team claimed five victories in the preliminaries at the second day of the Bocskai Memorial Tournament on Thursday in Debrecen in eastern Hungary.

The Chinese squad compete in the tournament for the first time, one of the most prestigious in the annual boxing calendar and an opportunity to secure qualification or warm up for the London Olympics.

Top Chinese boxers who have travelled to Debrecen include Olympic Games gold medallist and three-time world champion Zou Shiming; Olympic Games silver medallist Zhang Zhilei; world championship bronze medallist Wang Xuanxuan; Asian Games winner Hu Qing; and current Asian champion Chang Yong.

Chinese winners in Thursday's preliminaries were Chang Yong who beat Hungary's Norbert Kalucza 18-10 in the 52kg division; Zhang Jiawei who comfortably outpointed Krisztian Nagy of Hungary 14-3 in the 56kg division; Asian championship silver medallist Liu Qiang who beat Hungary's Milan Fodor 12-4 in the 60kg category, Fan Long-Meng who won in the 81kg class against Ferenc Hosszu of Hungary who retired in the second round; and Wang Xuanxuan who won 12-9 on points against Turkey's Avni Yildirim.

Titles will be awarded in the following weight categories: light fly (46-49 kg); fly (52kg); bantam (56kg); 60 light (60kg); lightwelter (64kg); welter (69kg); middle (75kg); light heavy (81kg); heavyweight (91kg); and super heavy (+91kg).

Over 160 participants from 16 countries and regions are taking part in the tournament, the 56th time the annual event has been organised. A nine-man Cuban boxing team was due to join the action but has pulled out after being held up in Paris due to severe winter weather and a strike at Paris airport.
