Newspaper urges improved security for overseas Chinese

02-10-2012 16:34 BJT

EIJING, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- A commentary run by the People's Daily, the flagship newspaper of the Communist Party of China, has called for improved efforts to protect overseas nationals as China's presence around the world increases.

Cases of overseas Chinese being caught in security problems have highlighted the necessity of precautions instead of simple post-event solutions, said the commentary under the byline of Zhou Renjie in the Friday edition of the newspaper.

In 2010, a total of 60 million Chinese people traveled abroad and China currently has over 16,000 outbound businesses, said the commentary, adding that many of them are in the world's less-developed trouble spots.

However, some enterprises fail to conduct sufficient security-risk evaluation prior to outbound projects, and many Chinese workers are ill-educated and poorly protected from overseas risks, the commentary said.

China is in dire need of a government-led safety net for its overseas nationals to effectively monitor, evaluate and handle the risks, it argued.

It also called on Chinese people and enterprises doing businesses abroad to be more aware of regional security situations and more conscious to protect themselves.

The 29 Chinese workers freed from abduction by Sudanese anti-government forces arrived in Beijing Thursday afternoon.

The commentary said the rescue of the workers is another manifestation of "Chinese strength," after cases of sending naval escort squads to the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters as well as missions to evacuate stranded people from troubled Libya.
