Poverty-reduction campaign targets rural disabled

02-10-2012 16:42 BJT

BEIJING, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Communist Party of China (CPC) committees in areas across the country will help lift 100,000 rural families with disabled family members out of poverty by the end of 2015, according to a statement issued by the China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF) on Friday.

The campaign was jointly launched by the Organizational Department of the CPC Central Committee and the CDPF, targeting families of the disabled in rural areas living under the poverty line.

During the campaign, local CPC committees will see to it that eligible members of targeted families are covered by medical insurance policies and/or old-age pensions, that disabled family members are covered by basic living allowances, and that all targeted families have roofs over heads.

Meanwhile, CPC committees should entrust their members or specialists to provide one-on-one help to the families in question, including choosing one trade for them which both suits their conditions and brings stable income.

Rural CPC committees are also obliged to recommend eligible members of the targeted families to work for village enterprises, and assist these families in getting micro-financing.

China had reduced its poverty-stricken population in rural regions to 26.88 million at the end of 2010 from 94.22 million a decade ago, said a government white paper released in mid-November 2011.
