Yunnan's drought woes continue

02-20-2012 17:06 BJT

Concerns are mounting over the severe drought spreading over southwest China's Yunnan province. New water sources are being searched for and other measures are being taken to fight against the large-scale disaster.

The drought has left residents with little access to drinking water. The West River in Yunnan Province has been cut off since September and the agricultural production in the disaster area has been severely hindered.

Su Yixin, villager from Weishan County said: "The drought this year is worse than any of those in recent years. If we don’t pump water with machine, the crops would absolutely die. Whatever it takes, we will ensure the harvest."

To minimize the agricultural loss, the local government is providing financial aid for villagers to purchase irrigation pumps.

Liu Yinhu, Head of Water Station said: "We have about a hundred and twenty pumps throughout the whole town. So rape seed alongside the West River is basically sound. Even though the pumps cost more than usual, farmers are still very active."

Shortage of drinking water is one of the major difficulties faced by the local people. Yet in Xiangyun County of Dali the drought-resistant well built late last year eases the situation there.

Villager from Ganhai village, Xiangyun County said: "Water has been cut off since last April and water in the aquifers ran out as well. But the government built a big well for us and now the water problem in our village is basically resolved at the moment."

The Xiangyun County government has issued a 75-well construction plan. Some of the wells are finished and have been put into service and work on the rest has been accelerated. According to authorities, measures vary according to different water situation. Relief work is underway to battle the severe conditions.
