Iran's air defense forces repel mock enemy fighters in drills: report

02-22-2012 09:27 BJT

TEHRAN, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- The air defense units of Iran's Khatam-ol-Anbiya Air Defense Base "successfully" identified and repelled a massive airstrike by mock enemy fighter jets on the second day of the air defense maneuvers on Tuesday, the semi- official Mehr news agency reported.

On Monday, Iran started four-day "Sarallah" air defense maneuvers in southern part of the country, covering a span of about 190,000 square km.

On Tuesday, several mock enemy fighters tried to make an incursion into areas under the control of Iranian air defense units, but Iranian forces identified them using advanced radar systems and forced them to move away, said Mehr.

Also, the hypothetical enemy carried out an electronic attack on Iran's air defense systems and its jammers radiated interfering signals toward Iranian radar systems, but Iranian air defense units managed to repel the threat using electronic warfare tactics, said the report.

According to the public relations department of the Khatam-ol- Anbiya Air Defense Base, "Sarallah" maneuvers are meant to enhance the country's integrated network of air defense with a focus on modern defensive tactics.

The other purpose of the war games is to increase the country's preparedness in the face of military threats, particularly possible attacks on densely populated areas, sensitive and vulnerable centers, and nuclear facilities.

The exercises are also aimed at increasing the mobility of rapid response forces to engage in asymmetric warfare and improving coordination between air defense units of various forces in order to provide the country with wide air defense coverage, according to the report.

During the maneuvers, domestically manufactured advanced missile systems, air defense artillery systems, various radar systems, and air force surveillance aircraft are being used and tested.

Air defense units of the Armed Forces and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and the lookouts of the National Police and the Basij voluntary forces are taking part in the exercises under the command of the Khatam-ol-Anbiya Air Defense Base, said Mehr.

On Sunday, the ground forces of the IRGC started a new round of drills in central Iran.

IRGC ground forces commander Mohammad Pakpour said Sunday that IRGC infantry units and battalions of Basij voluntary forces would take part in the two-day military exercises.

Pakpour said Saturday that the drills code-named Valfajr would be conducted in the desert area of central Iran and in the central province of Yazd and were aimed at enhancing the combat preparedness of the IRGC forces and to show the might of IRGC in confronting the possible threats of "non-regional enemies."

Earlier this month, the IRGC's ground forces conducted two rounds of separate military exercises, one of them near Iran's southern waters and near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Pakpour said the IRGC is completely prepared to strike back at any act of aggression against the Islamic Republic.
