Chinese leaders join panel discussions, Hu stressing stability in Tibet

BEIJING, March 9 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Friday stressed maintaining national integrity, ethnic unity and social stability in Tibet, and other Chinese leaders also joined with national legislators in panel discussions.

During a panel discussion with legislators from the Tibet autonomous region at the ongoing parliamentary session, Hu urged the consolidation of foundation for the construction of a socialist new Tibet.

"Stability and harmony should be maintained in Tibet, with social management being enhanced and improved," he told the deputies to the National People's Congress (NPC).

A prolonged educational campaign should be stepped up to promote ethnic unity, according to the president.

He called for more spending and efforts to ensure and improve the people's livelihood and upgrade basic public services, so that people of various ethnic groups in Tibet can share the fruits of reform and development.

Hu also called for adherence to the central authorities' guidelines on Tibet and for tasks aimed at reform, development and stability to be carried out in a down-to-earth manner.

More should be done to promote development by bolstering the region's agriculture, industry and service trades, he suggested.
