LIMA, March 9 (Xinhua) -- A fire at a Ministry of Education warehouse Thursday had caused an estimated loss of over 100 million U.S. dollars, destroying 500,000 textbooks and 61,000 laptops destined for schools around the country, Education Minister Patricia Salas said Friday.

Firefighters extinguish fire of a central warehouse of the Ministry of Education in Lima, capital of Peru, March 9, 2012. A category 3 fire started on Thursday night and was controlled early on Friday. The fire destroyed thousands of books, which would have been distributed to students from the provinces, leaving 5 firefighters injured and fire trucks useless, local press reported. Salas said thousands of teaching materials and office supplies that were ready to be shipped to schools nationwide were destroyed in the blaze.

However, she said that the incident will not stop the advance of the school period nor the work of the teachers, who started classes on March 1.

The fire broke out about 9 pm Thursday (0200 GMT Friday) and took 11 hours to control, with 10 firemen injured, three of them for smoke inhalation. Peruvian officials said the cause of the blaze was under investigation.

The destroyed computers had been purchased from a U.S.-based non-profit association. There are about 9 million students in Peru, and the country's public education system ranks among the lowest in the Americas.
