CARACAS, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is recovering after cancer surgery in Cuba and will return home in a few days, a minister said Tuesday.

"The president has been in a very good mood on the cusp of his return to (Venezuela) this week," Communication and Information Minister Andres Izarra said via Twitter.

Izarra posted a few photos of Chavez on the social networking site, saying the photos were taken Monday during a birthday celebration for Maria Gabriela, one of the president's daughters.

The photos showed Chavez surrounded by his children and other family members.

Chavez is recovering in Cuba's capital city Havana, where he underwent surgery in late February to remove a cancerous tumor. He was operated upon in Cuba last June for the same reason.

Chavez, who plans to run again in the October presidential elections, has been keeping in touch with his ministers mostly through phone calls, which have been broadcast over state-run Venezuelan television together with photos taken by his closest aides.

The president said he is recovering well and will return home this week from Cuba.
