Indonesia seeks bigger role of private sector in disaster management

03-14-2012 15:21 BJT

SUKABUMI, Indonesia, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia on Wednesday called on the private sector to be involved further in disaster management, using their CSR budget.

"Currently, role of private sector in disaster management is still small. Besides, their role focuses on emergency response," said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, head of Data Center, Information and Public Relations at the National Agency for Disaster Management ( BNPB) on the sidelines of a training session on disaster management here.

He added that currently the paradigm of disaster management has shifted from emergency response to reduction of disaster risks. "Therefore, role of private sector in disaster management should be increased in pre-disaster period," said Nugroho.

He said that with their CSR budget, companies could build " strong villages" or "village food storages" that would be very important during disaster.

According to him, private sector's role is very imporant as allocaton fund for the BNPB is only 4.5 trillion rupiah (about 400 million U.S. dollars).

"The money is to cover disaster mitigation throughout the country," he said.
