BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhua) -- The Zhonghua Book Company, a famous Chinese publisher, has received a congratulatory letter from President Hu Jintao on the occasion of its 100th birthday.

Hu extended regards to and congratulated the company's current and former staff, saying in his letter that he has been a loyal reader of many books published by the company.

The company has published a large number of historical and cultural classics through the relentless efforts of multiple generations of workers, gaining the acclaim and trust of a vast number of readers, Hu wrote in the letter.

Hu said the company has made great contributions in carrying forward traditional Chinese culture, promoting academic prosperity and spurring social progress.

The company in 1936 published the eight-million-character Chinese Lexicographic Encyclopedia ("Cihai," or "Sea of Words"), the most authoritative Chinese language reference tool. In 1978, it brought the fully annotated version of the Twenty-Four Histories, an ancient book collection recounting China's 4,000-plus-year history, to bookshelves.

It also took the lead in introducing Western scientific and cultural classics to China, including Charles Darwin's "The Theory of Evolution," William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" and Leo Tolstoy's "War and Peace."

Hu urged the company to take heed a decision made at the sixth plenary session of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on reforming the country's cultural industry and boosting its soft power.

Premier Wen Jiabao also expressed congratulation on the company's centennial.

A centennial ceremony was held at the Great Hall of the People on Thursday. While meeting the participants, Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, urged the company to blend knowledge and readability in its publications in order to better popularize traditional Chinese culture.

Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, attended the ceremony and encouraged the company to be people-centered and create more works to meet the diversified demands of readers.
