Police confiscate 160 guns sold online

03-23-2012 14:28 BJT

NANJING, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Police have busted a gun production and sales network of 301 suspects and confiscated more than 160 guns, according to police in east China's Jiangsu province.

The ring was first detected in April 2011 when the municipal police of Jiangdu, Jiangsu province, found that an Internet user, surnamed Ji, purchased guns and lead bullets online, said Jiangdu police.

After further looking into the case, police arrested a man, surnamed Zheng, who allegedly sold guns and bullets through QQ, China's most popular instant messaging network. Zheng was also suspected of selling ammunition through online clothing stores, police said.

Zheng was found to have conducted 210 sales transactions with a value of 50,000 yuan (7,937 U.S. dollars), police said.

Then, the arrest of a high-level sales agent, surnamed Liu, in south China's Jiangxi province blew the case wide open, leading to the arrests of another 260 suspects, police said.

Police were also able to identify netizen "EMODECHIBANG," which means "evil's wing" in English, in south China's Guangdong province as the top salesman. They also learned that the weapons were produced in central China's Hubei province, police said.

The manufacturer, surnamed Li, was suspected having used a company registered in Hubei as a disguise to produce guns since 2011. Li has been arrested, police said.

Further investigation is underway.
