European rocket blasts off with cargo craft to resupply ISS

03-23-2012 14:40 BJT

PARIS, March 23 (Xinhua) -- An Ariane rocket blasted off Friday from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, lifting up a cargo craft toward the International Space Station (ISS).

The craft, Edoardo Amaldi, named after a 20th century Italian physicist, was launched at 0434 GMT, the European Space Agency said on its web portal.

It was laden with tons of cargo, including food, clothing, spare parts and propellant for the ISS, the heaviest payload ever launched by an Ariane rocket.

The Edoardo Amaldi would stay at ISS until early September, before undocking and burning up during its re-entry into Earth's atmosphere.
