NEW YORK, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese political advisor Sun Jiazheng Thursday met Kiyotaka Akasaka, UN under-secretary-general for communication and public information and Sha Zukang, UN under-secretary-general for economic and social affairs to promote bilateral cooperation, particularly on NGO issues.

During the meetings, Sun, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and president of China NGO Network for International Exchanges (CNIE), said that the United Nations plays a positive role in maintaining world peace, coordinating international economic relations and promoting exchanges and cooperations between countries.

The CNIE is willing to further enhance communication and contact with the UN, strengthen mutual understanding, and support more Chinese civil organizations to participate in UN activities, he said.

In addition, the CNIE is also ready to hold major global or regional NGO events and conduct pragmatic cooperation with NGOs from other countries and regions, Sun added.

The high-level UN officials said the UN Department of Public Information and the UN Economic and Social Council actively support more Chinese NGOs to join the UN, and hope to reinforce cooperation with the CNIE and jointly hold major NGO events.
