JAKARTA, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Seven people were trapped and burned to death in a deadly fire incident that consumed a store in North Sumatra capital city of Medan early Tuesday, local media reported.

All of the victims, consisting of four adults and three children, were found lying dead on the second floor that functioned as their residence, witnesses said.

According to witnesses, the fire was initially seen on 5.00 a.m. in the morning. After the fire squad arrived at the scene, the fire had already engulfed the whole building.

A fireman said that rescuers had difficulties to help the victims on the second floor of the building.

"They set many layers leading to their rooms. There were too many locked doors in the building. The windows were also locked from inside that made us hardly able to break in," the fireman said as quoted by the largest news portal

All of the victims were found burnt inside their rooms. They were believed to have slept and poisoned by the thick smoke from fire.

The victims believed to be from one family that runs an electronics store downstairs were placed in state-run Pirngadi hospital.
