Missing Sri Lankan political activist found

04-10-2012 14:02 BJT

COLOMBO, April 10 (Xinhua) -- A Sri Lankan political activist who was reportedly missing since last weekend, has been found and has returned to Australia on Tuesday, police said.

Police Spokesman Ajith Rohana told Xinhua that dual Sri Lankan and Australian citizen Premkumar Gunaratnam appeared before the police Monday night and issued a statement over his alleged abduction.

Gunaratnam was then escorted by the police and Australian High Commission officials to the airport on Tuesday morning from where he flew back to Australia.

The police spokesman said that they were now investigating the incident based on the statement Gunaratnam had provided to the police.

Family members of Gunaratnam said earlier that he together with another political activist were believed to have been abducted last weekend.

Gunaratnam went missing just a couple of days before he launched a new socialist political party in Colombo.

The Australian High Commission had requested the Sri Lankan Defence Ministry to assist them to locate the missing person.

However, the Defence Ministry said there were no records to indicate an individual by the name of Premkumar Gunaratnam had entered the country from Australia.

The government had also denied claims made by Gunaratnam's family that the security forces had abducted him.

Gunaratnam was a former member of the Marxist People's Liberation Front, a leading opposition political party in Sri Lanka.

Gunaratnam and a few others split from the People's Liberation Front, also known as the JVP, following a rift with the party leadership.
