ISABELA CITY, Philippines, April 10 (Xinhua) -- At least 22 soldiers were injured in Tuesday's explosion in the southern Philippine province of Basilan, the military said.

Initial reports from Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) disclosed that the troops were patrolling the village of Baiwas in Sumisip town when an improvised bomb exploded at around 8:30 a.m. local time.

The explosion occurred outside the perimeter of the Abu Sayyaf camp that fell into the army ranger operations last February.

The military said 22 soldiers were injured from the blast. The wounded victims were immediately retrieved and airlifted to the military hospital for treatment in Zamboanga City. Five of the victims are in critical condition.

Lt. Col. Randolf Cabangbang, Westmincom spokesman, said the improvised bomb could be among the booby traps set up by the Abu Sayyaf near its former training base.
