DPRK's satellite launch ignores UN resolution: Russia

04-10-2012 16:34 BJT Special Report:DPRK’s Rocket Launch |

MOSCOW, April 10 (Xinhua) -- The planned satellite launch by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) defied UN Security Council resolutions, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

"We consider the decision by Pyongyang to carry out a launch of satellite as an example of disregard for UN resolutions," spokesman Alexander Lukashevich was quoted as saying by the Ria Novosti news agency.

Lukashevich said the way out of the situation should be found by political and diplomatic methods.

The DPRK last month announced its plan to launch the Kwangmyongsong-3 satellite, an earth observation satellite, between April 12 and 16 to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of DPRK founder Kim Il Sung.

The DPRK's Korean Committee for Space Technology said it would invite experienced foreign experts on space science and technology as well as journalists to observe the launch.

Russia would not send specialists to the DPRK to monitor the launch, as it was a "direct violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1874, supported by Russia," federal space agency Roscosmos said.

Under the resolution, the DPRK is prohibited from conducting launches that use ballistic missile technology.

Russia has said it is seriously concerned about the DPRK's satellite launch plan, calling on Pyongyang not to go ahead with it.
