China to monitor PM2.5 in 85 cities

China will monitor its PM2.5, or fine particulate matter 2.5 microns or less in diameter in over 540 sites of 85 cities including municipalities, provincial capitals, as well as three key regions -- east China's Yangtze River Delta, south China's Pearl River Delta, and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area in the north, in 2012.

The proportion of cities meeting new qualified air standards will drop sharply, and two third of the cities at prefectural-level will fail to meet the new standards, according to preliminary estimates of Ministry of Environmental Protection.
