SAN FRANCISCO, April 14 (Xinhua) -- One sailor was killed and three others were missing Saturday evening when a racing yacht ran aground off the coast of San Francisco, local authorities said.

The U.S. Coast Guard said a Mayday call, an internationally-used emergency procedure used in radio communications as a distress signal, went out at about 3 p.m. local time, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The accident happened near the Farallon Islands, a group of islands and sea stacks about 43 km off the coast of San Francisco.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Air National Guard rescued three people on the rocks and pulled the deceased sailor from the water. They were still looking for the missing crew members.

The yacht, a 11.6-meter sailing vessel named Low Speed Chase, is based out of the San Francisco Yacht Club and was competing in a nautical contest when the accident happened.
