Brazil names preliminary volleyball squad for Olympics

04-24-2012 10:50 BJT Special Report:2012 London Olympic Games |

RIO DE JANEIRO, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Brazil volleyball coach Bernardinho has pulled a selection surprise by including 36-year-old setter Ricardinho in his preliminary 25-man squad for the London Olympics.

The list will be trimmed to 12 in early July for the final phase of the world league and the Olympics, which begin on July 27.

Ricardinho, part of Brazil's gold medal-winning Olympic team at the Athens Games in 2004, has not represented his country since 2007.

He was instrumental in helping Volei Futuro reach the final of this year's Brazilian super league, which they lost 3-1 to Cruzeiro on Saturday.

Ricardinho's selection was not the only surprise. Brazil's 2010 world champion Joao Paulo Tavares was dropped, as was Sesi-Sao Paulo's Wallace.

New faces included William Arjona (Cruzeiro), Lucarelli (Minas) and Renan (Sao Bernardo).

Squad: Bruninho (Cimed), Marlon (RJX), Ricardinho (Volei Futuro), William Arjona (Cruzeiro), Raphael (Trentino-ITA); Giba (Cimed), Murilo (Sesi-SP), Dante (RJX), Thiago Alves (Panasonic Panthers-JAP), Joao Paulo Bravo (Arkas Spor-TUR), Lucarelli (Minas), Mauricio (Cruzeiro); Leandro Vissotto (Cuneo-ITA), Theo (RJX), Lorena (Volei Futuro), Wallace (Cruzeiro), Renan (Sao Bernardo); Lucao (RJX), Rodrigao (Sesi-SP), Sidao (Sesi-SP), Gustavo (Cimed), Eder (Cimed), Henrique (Minas); Serginho (Sesi-SP) e Mario Jr (Volei Futuro).
