FAIZABAD, Afghanistan, April 26 (Xinhua) -- At least three policemen were killed and 11 others went missing when a check post in northeastern Afghan province of Badakhshan got attacked by militants Wednesday night, a provincial official said Thursday. "An unknown number of militants attacked a police check post in Basand area of Wardoj district Wednesday night, triggering a gunfight that left three policemen dead,"the provincial official who declined to be named told Xinhua.

The 11 missing police force may have been kidnapped by militants, he said.

Meantime, Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, a police spokesman in the region, confirmed the incident, saying"A search and cleanup operation has been launched in the area and details will be released to media afterward."

Taliban militants have claimed responsibility for the incident. Taliban Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told local media via cell phone that Taliban fighters had launched an attack on a police check point in Badakhshan, killing several policemen and capturing 20 others.

Earlier this month, three policemen were killed in the same district and 10 others were kidnapped but the kidnapped security personnel were released several days after the attack by militants in the mountainous province, 315 km northeast of Kabul.

Afghan and NATO military officials said recently that impressive Taliban-led attacks would occur in the coming weeks and months as spring and summer known as "fighting season" draw near.
