Denmark selects sailing team, wrestlers for London Games

04-27-2012 10:27 BJT Special Report:2012 London Olympic Games |

COPENHAGEN, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Denmark's Allan Noerregaard and Peter Lang have been selected for the 49-er class sailing team event at the London Olympics 2012, the Danish Olympic Committee ( DOC) said in a statement here Thursday.

The pair grabbed the single place available in the Danish 49-er class Olympic team by beating former Danish Olympic champion Jonas Warrer and teammate Soeren Hansen in a qualification race at the ongoing World Cup regatta in Hyeres, southern France.

Skipper Noerregaard and deckhand Lang's strong performances at earlier world championships in Mallorca and Perth also helped secure their selection for this year's summer Games, the DOC said. This is the pair's first participation at the summer Olympics.

Warrer, who won gold in the 49-er class at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and Hansen, both announced Thursday that they will end their professional sailing careers following their failure to qualify.

Meanwhile, Danish wrestlers Mark O. Madsen and Haakan Nyblom qualified for the 74k and 55k categories respectively at the London Olympics, the DOC said.

They took their berths in the Danish Olympic team following convincing wins at a qualification tournament in Sofia, over the weekend.
