Cuba, Dominican Republic reach semis of Olympic women's volleyball qualifiers

MEXICO CITY, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Three-time Olympic champion Cuba and the Dominican Republic both reached the semifinals after respective wins in group stages of the London Olympics North, Central American and Caribbean zone women's volleyball qualifiers, local media reported on Wednesday.

Cuba won Group B with their third consecutive victory defeating Mexico 25-17, 25-14 and 25-9 on Tuesday while the Dominican Republic, ranked 9th in the world, advanced to the semifinals after winning Group A also with their third successive victory, beating Puerto Rico 26-24, 25-19 and 25-19.

Elsewhere, Canada defeated Honduras 25-9, 25-10 and 25-8 while Costa Rica defeated Trinidad and Tobago 25-19, 25-22, 15-25 and 25-13.

In playoffs, Mexico will meet Canada while Puerto Rico take on Costa Rica. Winners of these games will go up against Cuba and the Dominican Republic in the semifinals apiece.

Champion of the tournament will go to the London Games while the runner-up will go to a playoff tournament in Japan.
