Three journalists found killed in eastern Mexico

05-04-2012 16:29 BJT

MEXICO CITY, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Four bodies were found Thursday in the crime-ridden eastern Mexican state of Veracruz, and three of them belong to local photographers, state officials said.

The bodies, of three men and a woman, were found dumped in plastic bags in a wastewater canal and bore signs of torture and had been dismembered, the Veracruz State Attorney General's Office said.

It said police officers discovered the bodies following reports by passers-by that they have seen suspicious black plastic bags in the canal.

The victims were identified as Esteban Rodriguez, Gabriel Huge,Guillermo Luna Varela and Irasema Becerra, officials said. The first three were all local photojournalists and the fourth was Varela's girlfriend.

One unnamed colleague said Varela and Huge were nephew and uncle.

Local journalist groups said the three slain journalists, who had been reporting crime-related stories, had fled the state temporarily after receiving death threats last year.

Federal authorities would be asked to help investigate the case as criminal groups might have involved, the office said.

According to police, including the latest victims, at least seven serving or former reporters have been killed over the last 18 months.

Veracruz, a common route for drugs and migrants coming from the south on the way up to the United States, has seen increasing fightings among drug gangs in recent years.
