MOSCOW, May 13 (Xinhua) -- A bus carrying a children's ensemble collided with another bus in Russia's southern Stavropol region Sunday, killing four people and injuring several others, local media reported.

"In all, the hospital admitted 18 patients. Four people died, including two children and two women," local operative staff was quoted as saying by the Itar-Tass news agency.

"The injured are receiving appropriate treatment, while three of them are in grave condition," the source said.

According to local media, the injured were mainly children from an art school in the town of Tyrnyauz in the North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria.

The children were traveling to Stavropol to take part in a nationwide contest when the bus was hit by a bigger one from behind.

A criminal case has been opened over the collision of the two buses, the Stavropol territorial police department said.

"Under the preliminary investigation, both drivers had repeatedly breached traffic rules before," it said.
