BRUSSELS, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) on Sunday condemned the abduct attempt against the Bulgarian ambassador in Yemen, saying this indicates "fragile security situation" in the country.

The EU condemns the attack that injured Boris Genadiev Borisov on Saturday, and expressed a "sincere solidarity" with the ambassador and his country, said a statement by the EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton

Ashton urged the Yemeni authorities to do their utmost to investigate the incident.

Unknown gunmen intercepted the car of Borisov and tried to kidnap him at gunpoint while he was with his wife driving in a crowded street in central the capital Sanaa.

The ambassador was slightly injured, but the kidnappers managed to escape, an interior ministry official told Xinhua.

The official blamed the kidnap attempt for a suspected cell affiliated with al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).
