2 injured in clashes between smugglers and border patrol in southern Tunisia

TUNIS, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Clashes erupted between border patrols and smugglers overnight Saturday near the Ras El Jedir border crossing between Tunisia and Libya, official TAP press agency reported Sunday.

At least two people were injured in clashes between border patrols, composed of police, customs officers and army units, and smugglers with some 30 trucks filled with fruit and electric appliances destined to Libya.

The incident triggered the anger of salesmen in Tunisia's southern town of Ben Guerdene who also clashed with local police authorities.

Tension remained high on Sunday morning among the inhabitants of Ben Guerdene, who feel that their only source of livelihood was "threatened," TAP said.

A high-level security source said the situation in the border area was "catastrophic," calling on the government to prevent traffickers from smuggling goods and "destroying the national economy and the state budget," TAP said.
