Black box may go to Russia for further probe: Indonesian official

05-14-2012 14:29 BJT

JAKARTA, May 14 (Xinhua) - A senior official at Indonesia's agency overseeing the Russian plane crash investigation said on Monday that there is a possibility the flight-data recorder, popularly known as black box, may be taken to Russia following a preliminary examination by Indonesia's team.

"If the ongoing investigation shows that we need Russian technology to explore the black box's data, we will bring it to their country. That is the international procedure," National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) chief Tatang Kurniadi said.

He underlined, however, that the starting point of the examination of airplane's black box would be in Indonesia, saying that he had discussed it with Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Alexander A. Ivanov.

"We will open the black box here in Indonesia first," Tatang was quoted as saying by the Jakarta Post online.

The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) said on Sunday that the plane's flight recorder had been spotted although it would take some time before it could be retrieved.

Sunaryo, an official at Sukhoi's Indonesian agent, PT Trimarga Rekatama, said earlier that there was a probability that Indonesia 's technology would not match that used in the black box, and thus it should be brought to Russia for investigation.

Fourty-five passengers, including ten foreigners, were killed in the crash of Russian Sukhoi Superjet 100 passenger plane in Mount Salak, Bogor regency near Indonesia's capital city of Indonesia on Wednesday afternoon.

The plane was on a mission to promote the Russia's brand new civil plane produced by Sukhoi for potential customers in six countries, in which Indonesia was the fourth country visited by the plane.
