Indonesia to finish evacuation of Russian jet crash victims

05-14-2012 15:10 BJT

JAKARTA, May 14 (Xinhua) -- An Indonesian senior official at National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) said that teams tasked with recovering the remains of an ill-fated Russian airplane's victims will finish their mission on Monday as scheduled, local media reported on Monday.

Basarnas head Vice Marshal Daryatmo said late on Sunday that all evacuation teams had swept the entire site on Mt. Salak, West Java, where the Sukhoi Superjet 100 crashed.

"One of our teams even reached a location that was close to the larger pieces of the plane's wreckage. I hope the evacuation process will be completed on Monday accordingly," he was quoted by the Jakarta Post as saying. Teams had to postpone their mission on Sunday because of bad weather.

The aircraft, with 45 people onboard, disappeared from radar screens at 2:33 p.m. local time last Wednesday before an Air Force helicopter spotted its wreckage situated at an altitude of about 5, 800 feet in the foothills of Mt. Salak's in Cidahu, Sukabumi, at about 9:15 a.m. the following day.

Teams found that the bodies of the Sukhoi passengers were no longer intact.

Teams reportedly sent 18 body bags of remains to R. Sukanto Police Hospital in Kramatjati, East Jakarta, as of Sunday for identification by a forensic team. Chances are slim that any passengers survived the crash.
