BEIJING, June 5 (Xinhua) -- June 5 marks World Environment Day. Although the scale of China's industrial manufacturing makes it one of the world's biggest polluters, the country is committed to cleaning up its act by introducing a variety of new sources of energy. The following facts detail the development of China's new energy industry.

-- China is a global leader in wind power. According to the China Wind Energy Association (CWEA), China installed wind turbines generating 17.6 gigawatts (GW) of power in 2011. The installed turbines brought China's cumulative wind power capacity, as of the end of 2011, to 62.4 GW, up 39.4 percent year on year.

-- China's photovoltaic power capacity increased from less than 100,000 kilowatts (KW) in 2005 to 600,000 KW in 2010, according to a white paper on China's policies and actions for addressing climate change released by the State Council Information Office.

-- China's nuclear power capacity currently stands at 10.82 million KW, with another 30.97 million KW under construction.

-- China's biomass power capacity stands at about 5 million KW. The country uses about 14 billion cubic meters of methane every year for heating homes, fueling stoves and other purposes, reaching about 40 million households.
