UN members urged to face realities of disaster

06-14-2012 06:13 BJT

UNITED NATIONS, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Margareta Walhstrom, UN secretary-general's special representative for disaster risk reduction, urged member states on Wednesday to face the realities of the economic and human impact of disasters in the past 20 years.

"She noted that in the past two decades, it is conservatively estimated that disasters have killed 1.3 million people, affected 4.4 billion, and resulted in economic losses of two trillion," UN spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters here at the daily news briefing.

Walhstrom expressed her hope that the forthcoming Rio+20 Summit scheduled for June 20-21 in Brazil would introduce "realistic and sustainable development goals which will eradicate this enormous waste of human, social and economic resources," said Nesirky.

Walhstrom also urged member states to follow the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA), which was adopted in 2005. The HFA is the first action plan that describes in detail the requirements from all different sectors in order to reduce disaster losses.

"All UN member states have endorsed the Hyogo Framework for Action," she said, adding "This is especially important in the absence of any meaningful progress tackling climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions -- let's have action, disaster risk reduction saves lives and livelihoods and build resilience."
